A Baltic Escape Talk

Dr David Parry gave a fascinating talk to members of the society entitled A Baltic Escape.  We were delighted that there were also members from the Anglo-Finnish Society in attendance. Dr. Parry described how an Anglo-Swedish syndicate managed to effect the escape of 83 merchant ships from the Baltic in 1916-18. The ships had been trapped in Swedish, Finnish and Russian ports at the start of WW1 when the Germans and Danes mined the entrances to the Baltic. Dr Parry is the only person who has researched this part of history. We are very grateful to him for so generously giving up his time to give such an enlightening talk.
