France’s Royal Swedish Regiment

22nd February 2022 (18:00 - 20:00)
Buck's Club 18 Clifford Street London W1S 3RF

Professor Neil Kent

Professor Neil Kent will talk about a Swedish regiment that participated in France’s greatest military campaigns during the reign of Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI.

Queen Marie-Antoinette’s secret lover, Count Axel von Fersen, led the regiment during the American War of Independence, fighting alongside Lafayette and General George Washington until the victory at Yorktown. Axel von Fersen later struggled in vain to save the King and Queen during the French Revolution, and the regiment was disbanded at the close of the 18th century.

The talk is the British launch of Professor Neil Kent and Captain Clément Chevalier’s new book, which sheds new light on this influential military unit. The work examines the regiment’s role in diplomatic and military relations between France and Sweden. It follows the fates of soldiers who chose to fight and, in some cases, to die for France.

Drinks and canapés will be served and signed books available to purchase.
