Hasse Ekman and Ingmar Bergman – On the Rivalry Between the Two Giants in Post-war Swedish Cinema.
The 1940s can be considered the most creative and remarkable decade of all in Swedish cinema, and a major reason for this was the intense competition and, sometimes, collaboration between Sweden’s two greatest filmmakers of the era, Hasse Ekman and Ingmar Bergman. What is also remarkable is that while Bergman soon became an international celebrity and is still revered today while Ekman never became known outside Sweden and, after his retirement in the early 1960s, was practically forgotten in Sweden.
This lecture is about Ekman and his rivalry with Bergman and the question the film critics of the time were asking themselves: who was the greater filmmaker?
