Nichola Smalley, from University College London, received support to attend Swedish language courses in Uppsala.

In 2014 she completed her PhD exploring the use of contemporary urban language in Swedish and UK rap and literature at UCL. Nichola translates Swedish and Norwegian literature. She has translated  Jogo Bonito by Henrik Brandão Jönsson (Yellow Jersey Press) and An Unreliable Man by Norwegian superstar Jostein Gaarder (Weidenfeld & Nicolson) among others.

Nichola and author Andrzej Tichý are on the longlist for the International Booker Prize 2021 for the English translation of the novel Wretchedness (‘Eländet’).
